Most reserves are found in the eastern part of the country, located in the Greenstone Belt, but there are also deposits in the west. The value of gold exports from Suriname during the period 2016 to 2020 averaged 1.5 billion USD per year. Gold is predominantly exported to Switzerland, the UAE, Belgium, and the USA. The gold reserve in Suriname is currently estimated to be 4.2 million ounces of gold which should support production for a further 11-13 years.

As the technology and energy sectors drive up the demand for rare metals, the mining sector in Suriname has experienced significant growth. Suriname’s GDP has exploded from $830 million in 2001 to $2.86 billion in 2021.
