Mining Director (operation / production / land management) – South America

Job Description

GateSource HR Mining Division is looking for candidates for a Mining Director role.
The Mining Director will oversee the company’s mining operations, ensuring that production targets are met safely, efficiently, and sustainably. This individual will play a key role in strategic mine planning, operational leadership, and land rehabilitation efforts, ensuring compliance with all environmental and land management regulations. The Mining Director will lead a diverse team, working closely with refining operations, sustainability teams, and local communities to deliver optimal results while fostering positive environmental and social impacts.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operational Leadership: oversee the day-to-day management of mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production. Develop and implement long-term mine plans, scheduling, and resource management strategies to optimize mining output.
  • Strategic Planning: lead the development of mining strategies that align with the company’s business objectives. Ensure that mine operations support the efficient flow of ore to refining operations, collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet production and quality targets.
  • Land Management and Rehabilitation: design and implement land rehabilitation plans to restore mined-out areas for future use, including reforestation and agricultural purposes. Ensure compliance with land management laws and environmental policies while minimizing the environmental footprint of mining operations.
  • Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Compliance: enforce strict adherence to safety standards, ensuring the safety of all employees and contractors. Manage environmental sustainability initiatives, including reducing waste, controlling emissions, and overseeing water and tailings management practices.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: foster strong relationships with local communities, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders to address land use concerns and ensure transparent, positive interactions. Support corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs focused on education, infrastructure, and local development.
  • Financial Management and Cost Control: develop and manage operational budgets, ensuring cost efficiency while maintaining high levels of productivity. Monitor capital expenditures and control costs related to mining equipment, labor, and energy.
  • Technological Innovation: lead the implementation of new mining technologies and automation tools to improve operational efficiency and safety. Explore energy-efficient practices and alternative energy sources to reduce operational costs and environmental impact.


Requirements

  • Educational Qualifications: bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree or MBA is a plus.
  • Experience: minimum 10-15 years of progressive experience in mining operations, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role. Experience in large-scale surface mining operations is highly desirable.
  • Land and Environmental Management Expertise: proven experience in land rehabilitation, environmental sustainability, and compliance with land use regulations. Understanding of land management policies and best practices is a strong advantage.
  • Leadership Skills: strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to lead large, diverse teams. Experience working in cross-functional and joint-venture settings is an asset.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: demonstrated experience in enforcing HSE standards in mining operations and a proven commitment to promoting a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Management: excellent communication skills, with experience engaging with governmental bodies, local communities, and other stakeholders. Ability to manage community relations, particularly in land-use negotiations.
  • Technological and Operational Innovation: knowledge of modern mining technologies, digitalization tools, and energy-efficient practices.
